Svaneti consists from Most of mountainous region - located on the southern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains and includes Inguri river and Tskhenistsqali valleys. The administrative center of Upper Svaneti is Municipality in Mestia, lower Svaneti - Lentekhi municipality. upper region includes “Enguri” river valley, while the lower region - Tskhenistskali Valley.

Mestia is known for gold, silver, molybdenum, barite, volpranis and marble deposits. There are mineral springs, their number is more then 200. Upper region is an interest for scientists in many fields: for ethnographers, archeologists, historians, linguistics, Geographic’s Geologists, for art historians, and others.
Svans are Svanetis indigenous population, they have their own verbal, unwritten language, which belongs to the group of the Kartvelian languages. Svans accepted Christianity with Lazica in 523 and therefore from the very beginning their literary language was considered Georgian. Svans had an important role, especially in the history of the Golden Age (David the Builder and Queen Tamar time).
The earliest reference is found in the Greek and Roman historians about Svans , Strabo (BC. 64/63 and they are on 23/24 yrs.) And with Pliny (AD 23/24 years). Strabo wrote in his geographical works about the Svans, who had special courage and power, were in charge at Dioscurias (Sukhumi) located above the summits of the Caucasus, and had Basilevsi (leader), consisting of 300 men council, and are able to gather 200,000-strong army. Rivers in the region brought gold that Svans gathered with fur skins and other instruments . So spread the myth of the Golden Fleece, leather - says Strabo.
